McAfee Total Protection 2007

So many security threats now target our PCs every day that combating them all involves an arsenal of protection software. To save you needing to install multiple programs, McAfee's aptly-named Total Protection 2007 package covers no less than 10 danger areas to offer comprehensive and complete security when you're online. Features Essentially an enhanced version of McAfee Security Center, Total Protection combines the essentials anti-virus and anti-spyware tools and a firewall with a variety of powerful features for virtually every conceivable internet risk. These include the ability to conceal your presence on the web, activate parental controls, back-up and restore files, block spam and remove rootkits. The software monitors your wireless network for security weaknesses, prevents hackers from connecting and encrypts your personal data.

Norton Internet Security 2007

With so many companies now offering free protection against internet-based security threats, there are only a couple of reasons why you might want to fork out for software: complete security and a simple-to-manage package. Can the latest version of Norton Internet Security make the grade? Features We're well used to seeing security suites combine firewalls and anti-virus software to protect us, and Norton adds some more recent problems to its books, such as phishing, pharming and rootkits. However, it's what it leaves out that's most telling: no anti-spam, no internet filtering and no built-in back-up software. These can be purchased from Symantec separately, but to our minds that defeats the object of a security suite. Performance Symantec's record speaks for itself, and the company continues to have a virtually unblemished history of picking up viruses and other internet problems, and dealing with them before they have a chance to cause problems to the general public.

Surfcontrol claims zero Zero Day attacks

Internet security company Surfcontrol claims it has never passed on a security vulnerability to its subscribers the same day that the problem was announced.

Marketing manager Patrick Irwin claims that Surfcontrol has "never delivered a Zero Day outbreak to its customers" because the company's software blocks zero-day outbreaks and suspect viruses before they are picked up by the big anti-virus software makers.

Surfcontrol has also added to its range of software by releasing Web Defense and Mail Control services, based on its recent acquisition of Blackspider Technologies.

Mail Control scans all emails that pass through Surfcontrol's central servers, removing viruses and spam and producing a 'clean-feed' before they are sent to business customers.

PMN SIM enables public and private movement on GSM networks

Private Mobile Networks, the company spun out of Teleware to provide low power local GSM services using GSM guardband frequencies, has become the first of the recently-licensed companies to announce its plans.

The company has developed a solution based on network selection prioritisation on the SIM. When a phone containing a PMN SIM is turned on, it will first look to authenticate against its home low power network. If the local network is not available then the SIM will register the user with the macro cellular network, routing calls that way.

But calls will not be handed over if a user walks from one zone to the next. In other words, if you are making a call in your office, get in your car and drive away the call will drop and you will have to re-dial to start again.

Tete-a-Tete with Symantec Chief

The latest Symantec Internet Threat Report raises the alarm for home users, indicating them as the group most targeted for identity theft, fraud, and other financially motivated crimes.

What's more, the report suggests that attackers are now resorting to escaping detection via various techniques, as also to prolonging their presence on affected systems so as to wreak further havoc on unassuming users.

Given the findings, we thought the time was ripe to have a tete-a-tete with Vishal Dhupar, Managing Director, Symantec, who was incidentally quite happy to share notes with us and our readers:

What is the reason for home users being the most targeted group?
They are the weakest link among Internet users. They are the ones who no do not focus on any major protection tools other than some basic anti virus or spyware at the most.
