Owner of Online Dating Firm Arrested for Sending 5.4 Billion Spam ...

Wakefield, MA - infoZine - Experts at SophosLabs, Sophos's global network of virus, spyware and spam analysis centers, have warned companies to abide by anti-spam laws following the arrest of a man suspected of sending 5.4 billion spam emails promoting his dating website. Japanese authorities arrested 47-year-old Yoshimitsu Hirono, president of Tokyo-based dating website Takumi Tsushin, along with three other suspects. Approximately 90 million spam emails a day are said to have been sent promoting the site over a two month period. According to reports, the four men have admitted the allegations against them. "Competition between websites is fierce, and if found guilty these men would not be the first to have used illegal means to get an edge over their rivals," said Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant for Sophos.

Annoying spam may now be worth something...

Members of the public are poised to become spammer bounty hunters since several Internet associations clubbed together to offer substantial rewards for the successful prosecution of those who fill up email inboxes with junk mail. Despite legislation against spammers, there had, until now, been no incentive to report spam, according to Internet Society of South Africa chairman Alan Levin. Internet service providers have technological ways of dealing with junk mail but there is "a big gap in getting citizens to play a civil role", he said. For an admission of guilt fine, R7 500 will be awarded to the successful litigant, R15 000 for a conviction in a magistrate's court and R30 000 for a conviction in the high court. To get the reward, however, will involve following up with police and prosecutors until the spammer is convicted.

Web Security Application, Developed for Enterprise Content Governance

Redwood City, California - (Website Hosting Directory) - January 3, 2007 - Internet security solution firm, Clearswift, has launched a new content security application for enterprise-class companies, including a sophisticated content security engine. The MIMEsweeper Web Appliance, incorporates a ''plug and play'' web security solution, , along with a URL blocker and anti-virus and anti-spyware capability. Ian Bowles, Chief Operations Officer at Clearswift remarked, ''The explosion in spam and email viruses in the late '90's ensured that protecting the email gateway was pushed to the top of the agenda for organizations. The recent rise of web threats such as spyware and the silent threat of data leakage are now alerting businesses to the need for stronger web security solutions, but point solutions which only address spyware or URL blocking won't solve the web security threats facing organizations today.''
