Cisco buys IronPort

CISCO is to buy email and web security firm IronPort Systems for $US830 million ($1.06 billion) to tap growing demand for anti-virus and anti-spam software.

The acquisition of the privately held software and equipment vendor is Cisco's latest move to grow by integrating niche technologies that complement its main product line of routers and switches, which direct internet traffic.

Cisco said the acquisition, its fifth-largest, would enable the company to offer corporate clients a more comprehensive range of products.

IronPort is known for "reputation filters" that block spam by examining a sender's record. Blocking spam can help a company save bandwidth, as well as save employees the trouble of combing through unwanted email messages.

"IronPort has a reputation on filtering where they know the reputations of people who are sending emails or generating internet traffic," said Richard Palmer, senior vice president of Cisco's security technology group.

Computer viruses may be on the way

Local anti-spam experts say a huge wave of Internet viruses will start arriving this week, and they warn computer owners to be careful when opening unsolicited e-mail."It started over the weekend and it's the biggest blast of viruses that we've seen in more than two years," said Joel Smith, chief technology office of Gulf Breeze-based AppRiver, an e-mail security firm.Smith said the spammers are attempting to attach "malware" -- short for malicious software -- to an unsuspecting computer owner by sending e-mail and an attached video under various provocative headings."The spammers are using e-mail headings such as, 'Fidel Castro dead,' or they might offer a video about a storm in Europe and exaggerate the numbers of dead," Smith said. The spammer's goal is to get computer owners to download their bogus video, infecting the software with a program that allows them to effectively hijack the computer for their own use, he said.Once done, they may enlist thousands of computers and turn them into "botnets" -- or software robots -- which become unsuspecting members of a huge web of computers that send out millions of spam messages."The volume will be outrageous," Smith said.
