Akismet Needs More Spam Control

While Jeremiah's finding Akismet to be reliable, I'm finding it to be less so. With the number of comments increasing on Marketing Pilgrim, I'm thankful for the spam filtered out by Akismet, but I'm having to spend too much time "de-spamming" false positives.

This was magnified with the Digging of a recent article, resulting in many comments. I found many legitimate comments appearing in Akismet - including some from people who had commented before - and I had to manually de-spam them, often the same person multiple times.

It's become impossible to simply let Akismet do its thing and trust that it's not falsely flagging comments as spam.

If anyone knows of a better solution, I'm all ears. In the meantime, here's what Akismet needs (especially the Wordpress plugin).Manually enter trusted IPs or email addresses.

Monty Python's SPAMALOT Opens at Wynn Las Vegas Starring John O ...

LAS VEGAS, Jan. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- 1969 is remembered as the year that man walked on the moon; Elvis Presley took up residency in Las Vegas; and Monty Python's Flying Circus first aired on BBC television.

2007 will go down in the history books as the year that the inspired lunacy of Monty Python came to The Grail Theater at Wynn Las Vegas with the smash hit show Monty Python's SPAMALOT.

With SPAMALOT, Eric Idle has created a deliriously funny live spectacle which tells the legendary tale of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table, and their quest for the Holy Grail. The show features lusty maidens, dancing divas, a killer rabbit and the only legless knight appearing on the Las Vegas Strip.

Monty Python's SPAMALOT will star John O'Hurley, best known as J.

Spammers Get Creative

For any measure there is a counter measure. For each restriction there is a loophole. For each obstacle there is a detour. IT life is almost like Catch22: you raise the security bar and the online con-men go a step further in their wits. Take spam for example. We filter it based on statistics (Bayesian filters), but spammers outsmart us by generating dummy text messages that satisfy the filter conditions and pass for legitimate correspondence. In response we tighten up the filters and alas cut off legitimate emails. But spam still gets though by embedding textual message in attached graphic. We attempt to do an OCR on images and block emails with too much text in images. Spammers screw our OCR effort by adding random noise and filaments into their graphics-coded messages.

Lately spammers got particularly creative.

'Storm Worm' Now A High-risk Threat: Symantec

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 23 (Bernama) -- Symantec Security Response has raised the risk level of Trojan.Peacomm, also known as "Storm Worm", to a category 3 threat due to the speed and volume in which it is being aggressively spammed across the Internet. In a statement here Tuesday, Symantec said the Trojan, which was first spotted on Jan 19, has been raised to a higher category following a sustained increase in new versions of the attack which appeared over the weekend as the malware author responded to improvements in protection made by security companies by adjusting his tactics. "The Trojan.Peacomm is one of a number of spamming Trojan horse programs Symantec has seen lately that appear to originate from Russia and are clearly aimed at making money for the author by pumping up penny stocks. "The victim is enticed through social engineering techniques to open an attachment, which typically appears to be a video clip on a recent, newsworthy event," it said.
