Beware Of Malware-Infected Blogs
Internet users and blog-browsing addicts beware! As weblogs come free and are quite easy to use, they continue to gain popularity. Hence, criminals operating on the Internet are becoming more aware and are taking advantage of the use of these online personal journals to ensnare unwitting victims. Not long ago, spyware and malware were spread mostly through email and file-sharing, and system infection was prevented by spam blockers and email scanners. Nowadays, clicking on a seemingly harmless link can make you vulnerable to those with shady intentions in an instant. A common practice of computer crooks involves making up phony weblogs that look harmless or genuine. They then embed viral codes or keylogging programs within the site, and send out the blog's url address through spam e-mail, chat rooms or instant messenger.
Trojan uses hacked antivirus code
A new 'spambot' virus is doing the rounds that is able to masquerade as an anti-virus scanner to eliminate competition from other malware. Having infected the host system and acted to protect itself, it goes about its task of circulating spam, warn experts. The malware, named SpamThru, is practically undetectable by other virus scanners as its code is constantly mutating. Security vendor SecureWorks, which was one of the first to identify the threat, says that SpamThru is a Trojan that converts a system into an army of bots designed to spread unwanted email. "Detection by AV vendors is sparse," said Joe Stewart, a security expert with vendor SecureWorks. "But that's to be expected given that SpamThru is a money-making operation, and the author takes great care to make sure that detection by the major vendors is avoided by frequently updating the code.
IMSafer for Kids' Internet Surfing Is Available
IMSafer of Houston, Texas, has announced the availability of its flagship product - IMSafer - aimed at providing an additional level of protection to children and teens who chat online via instant messenger services. IMSafer uses lexical analysis, based on a growing set of rules, which have been shown by law enforcement to indicate inappropriate online relationships with children. It's a proactive tool for parents, and they don't have to do anything other than install it. The rules set evolves, much like anti-virus signatures or spam-blocker databases, providing lasting protection for parents as language and slang change, and as predators use new tactics to elicit personal information from children. Parents can feel safe to let their kids use IM and chat on any computer being monitored by IMSafer, whether it's in their home, a friend's home, at school or in a library.
You're Invited! To a Spam Party
Amy Joyce, a colleague of mine here at The Post opened an Evite the other day to learn she had won 500,000 pounds in a Scottish lottery. Her "host" was one aptly named Steven Award. The location of the shindig: Scotland, UK. The date: Tuesday, Oct. 10, at noon. She was asked to supply her full name, ticket number, age, sex, occupation, address and telephone number. She also had to sign her name to the following: "I endorse that this email address is mine, and that I am the rightful winner of the random lotto prize," and was warned that any false declaration would be "persecuted by law." Evite, which is owned by Ticketmaster, explicitly forbids spamming. They also limit the number of people you can invite to 750 to prevent spamming and, according to an Evite spokeswoman, will kick you off Evite if you send out 750 E-mails and no one writes back.
