| Two hours off the death bed
UNLIKE Kerry Packer, Derryn "the Mouth that Roared" Hinch did not die and come back from the "other side". But it has been a near thing. A few days ago Hinch's kidneys failed while he lay in Cabrini Hospital fighting septicaemia. "I didn't see any white lights but I know there's nothing effing out there anyway," Hinch told Diary, Packer-style. However, the Pack-man, who last year did go to the other side, didn't have a book due out two days after his first brush with death. Hinch, who says he is still on a four-hourly penicillin drip, is launching his latest tome, You Are So Beautiful (the passion and the pain of relationships), on Friday at St Kilda. In true human-headline tradition, he is crawling out of his hospital bed for the occasion. "They are unhooking me and giving me a two-hour leave pass," he said.

SpamSieve 2.5 improves accuracy
C-Command has updated SpamSieve, its Bayesian spam filtering software for Mac OS X, to version 2.5. The new update is free for registered users; SpamSieve costs $30 to register. SpamSieve is designed to augment your own e-mail software's built-in junk mail filtering by employing Bayesian filtering technology as well. It moves the suspected spam into a separate folder that you can review later. The parser and classifiers have changed with version 2.5 to improve accuracy, according to the developer. The in-memory "corpus" representation is more efficient, as well — that leads to better performance and less memory use. The software update feature has been rewritten, SpamSieve better parses words that have been misspelled, and auto-training now places a higher priority on corpus balance.
