Annoying spam may now be worth something...
Members of the public are poised to become spammer bounty hunters since several Internet associations clubbed together to offer substantial rewards for the successful prosecution of those who fill up email inboxes with junk mail. Despite legislation against spammers, there had, until now, been no incentive to report spam, according to Internet Society of South Africa chairman Alan Levin. Internet service providers have technological ways of dealing with junk mail but there is "a big gap in getting citizens to play a civil role", he said. For an admission of guilt fine, R7 500 will be awarded to the successful litigant, R15 000 for a conviction in a magistrate's court and R30 000 for a conviction in the high court. To get the reward, however, will involve following up with police and prosecutors until the spammer is convicted.
United States Is Worst for Malware Hosting and Spam-relaying
Wakefield, MA - infoZine - Sophos, a world leader in IT security, has published its Security Threat Report 2007, examining the threat landscape over the previous twelve months, and predicting malware and spam developments during 2007. The report - which can be downloaded here - reveals that the US hosts more than one third of the websites containing malicious code identified during 2006, as well as relaying more spam than any other nation. The Sophos Security Threat Report 2007 examines in detail the top ten malware threats of the last year, and also confirms that malware authors are continuing to turn their backs on large-scale attacks in favor of more focused strikes against computer users. Microsoft Windows continues to be the primary target for hackers, with internet criminals increasingly manufacturing downloading Trojan horses rather than mass-mailing worms to do their dirty work for them.
SonicWALL Fights Spam
During the year, SonicWALL recorded twice as many directory harvest attacks (DHA) as all spam attempts, which rose to two and a half times their 2005 levels, together with greater and more ingenious levels of phishing attacks, and a sharp increase in 'stealth' virus attempts. Gleb Budman, senior director, email security, SonicWALL, said, "Online theft has become more sophisticated, more 'stealthy' and more universal: rather than targeting large organisations, scammers are making substantial profits by focusing on individuals." SonicWALL's findings indicate that directory harvest attacks, or messages sent to non-existent company email addresses, rose by 505.6 per cent. According to a November '06 report by Gartner Group, 2006 profits from phishing scams rose fourfold, from $257 to $1244 per victim.
