CSC installs new internal spam filter

CSC Australia has installed MessageLabs software throughout the company to protect its 4,000 e-mail users from viruses and spam.

The services vendor said in the past it used "multiple solutions" to combat the problems, but still experienced spam levels of 49 percent for incoming e-mail.

Selecting an Internet-based suite of products had been important due to the nature of the company's workforce, according to Emily Richmond-Jones, CIO, CSC Australia.

"Our employees work in locations across the country, from open mine shafts to oil rigs, and accessing e-mails remotely is a normal part of their working day.

"To safeguard our users against these threats, we needed to provide them with an Internet-based solution to protect their e-mails from viruses and incoming spam," she said.

Spam flooding your inbox? Try using Bayesian filter

Question: I am drowning in spam! Isn't there something I can do to make it stop flooding my inbox?

Answer: Try using a Bayesian filter. These programs learn from your actions. As you flag messages as spam, they learn to filter them out. Challenge-response programs also work. These let e-mail through if the return address is on your approved list. I have links to both challenge-response programs and filters on my site at www.komando.com/news.

No Water in the Synagogue

Thought that it's a problem getting a bottle of water onto a plane in JFK? Try getting one past the security guard at the Fifth Avenue Synagogue as you are walking in to attend Shabbat services! This guy is tough! If you think I'm exaggerating... read on.Recently, my wife and I spent Shabbat in Manhattan. Bright and early Shabbat morning we arose and walked to the Fifth Avenue Synagogue. Standing at the door to greet us was a plainclothes security guard plus four -- that's right, FOUR -- NYPD officers in full uniform. Two cop cars were positioned outside with lights blaring. We felt like we were at a crime scene. "What's in that bag?" asked the security guard. "A bottle of water and our hotel room key," said my wife. "The key you can keep but you cannot enter the premises with that water. You will have to discard it in the trash bin outside the building." He wasn't kidding.Later that same day, we decided to join the afternoon Mincha services at the Park East Synagogue.

PAN AM Route El Trono Blanco in Mexico

It all started a few months before the actual ascent of the Pan Am route on El Trono Blanco in Mexico. I had tons of climbing experience at 24 climbing in J-Tree and Taquitzs/Suicide but had never done a lick of aid climbing. My climbing partner Bart Berry said lets do a wall this summer. I said sure, but you will have to teach me some aid climbing. As he was an old experienced guy in almost 30 with several big walls under his belt and a real job, I was counting on him to school me. At the time I was just some punk kid in college climbing every weekend and living on the cheap in San Diego. No problemo said Bart, get some aiders, haul bag, daisy chain, ascenders and a portaledge and you will be fine. He walked me through techniques for hauling and jumaring and turned me loose to get some experience on my own.

Better Legal Writing (and Living) Through Spam

If I got a billable hour for every e-mail I've received telling me I've won the lottery in the United Kingdom or that some despot's son in Nigeria urgently needs my bank account number to wire me $5.83 million, I'd be managing partner by now. But, while these messages are almost as annoying as constructive criticism, what most people don't realize is that some spam offers valuable lessons for those of us trying to develop an effective writing style.

The key to strong legal prose, like effective spam, is to sound believable enough to entice your reader to continue reviewing your e-mail out of curiosity, while maintaining a constant state of subtle confusion. This is the key to rainmaking as well, but I digress.

SUBJECT LINE

The 're:' line, as we senior associates like to call it, is the single most important feature of any piece of correspondence; whether it's an urgent letter to a judge or an anonymous hate mail to that loudmouthed partner in litigation.
