Only slight Spam taste in a memorable Knight

WITH non-traditional pantomimes being few and far between, New Eltham Methodist Church's 36th show, Galahad: A Knight to Remember, was a breath of fresh air, writes Mark Campbell. Written and directed by Kevin Doig, Galahad set out to tell several intertwined stories concerning Camelot and the Knights of the Round Table. Well-known characters such as King Arthur (Mark Cook), Merlin (Kevin Doig) and Morgana le Faye (Rachel King) rubbed shoulders with lesser-known ones, including Brissen (David Helps) and Nimue (Stephanie Cook). While all these were plucked from Malory's Le Morte d'Arthur, Squire Squodge (Michael Chuter) and Ector - The Amazing Dancing Bear (Marie Lemmon) were more obvious pantomime additions. Comparisons with Spamalot were unavoidable, although the only obvious nod to it was a rousing performance of 'We're Knights of the Round Table', the Monty Python song which gave the West End musical its name.

How to be efficient with your e-mail

Mike Song, a co-author of The Hamster Revolution: How to Manage Your E-Mail Before It Manages You, says his research shows that many office workers are spending up to 2½ hours a day handling e-mail.

A founding partner of Cohesive Knowledge Solutions, Song is an e-mail efficiency consultant. He and his partners find that most workers don't know how to screen and manage e-mail, particularly if they receive hundreds of messages a day.

Companies should have good firewalls and spam blockers to keep out irrelevant stuff. But many in-boxes will overflow anyway.

Song suggests using e-mail folders to sort messages.

"If you belong to an association that sends e-mailed newsletters, create a folder for that association and send the newsletter immediately to that folder to read later," Song said, "You don't have to read everything when it comes in."

Such a system requires paying attention to the subject line — assuming it's informative.

O'Hurley Will Be King Arthur in Vegas Spamalot

John O'Hurley, the former "Seinfeld" star who became a sensation on "Dancing with the Stars," will open the Las Vegas production of the Tony-winning musical Spamalot, which begins previews March 8 at Wynn Las Vegas.

O'Hurley will play King Arthur in the musical, which will officially open March 31. No other casting has been announced.

Spamalot, which features direction by Mike Nichols, is "lovingly ripped-off" from the screenplay of "Monty Python and the Holy Grail." The musical features a book by Eric Idle based on the screenplay he co-wrote with Monty Python creators Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Terry Jones and Michael Palin. The new score with music and lyrics by Idle and composer John Du Prez ("A Fish Called Wanda") includes songs ("Brave Sir Robin" and "Knights of the Round Table") from the original film as well as the Python signature "Always Look on the Bright Side of Life."

The musical, according to press notes, tells the "the legendary tale of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table, and their quest for the Holy Grail [and] features a chorus line of dancing divas (and serfs), flatulent Frenchmen, killer rabbits and a legless knight."

John O'Hurley, who made his Broadway debut in Chicago, has been seen on screen in "The Mullets," "Buying the Cow," "Teddy Bears' Picnic," "Race to Space," "Firetrap," "Slammed," "Cursed," "Love Stinks," "Three Secrets," "Wild Grizzly," "Tempting Fate," "Blood on Her Hands," "Lost on Earth," "Over the Top," "Murder Live!," "The Secret," "My Son Is Innocent," "The Power Within," "A Whole New Ballgame," "Valley of the Dolls," "General Hospital," "Mirror Images," "Scorch," "Santa Barbara," "The Young and the Restless," "Billy the Kid," "Something Is Out There," "Loving," "The Edge of Night" and "Seinfeld.
